Religion has for centuries been the most defining aspect of Tibetan life and has fundamentally shaped Tibetan identity. Bon was the indigenous religion of Tibet that, when part absorbed by the Buddhist traditions introduced from India in the 8th century, gave Tibetan B uddhism much of its distinctive character. Tibetan Buddhism belongs to the Mahayana Buddhist tradition and is cloudy influenced by Tantric (Vajrayana) Buddhism especially in reference to the metempsychosis system which is a distinct feature of Tibetan Buddhism.
