The prologue introduces us to a name little teller who is living on the edge of smart set as a proverbial inconspicuous man. He attacks the man in differentiate to force him to recognize the narrators individuality. The subsequent newspapers article and labeling of the casualty as a mugging changes the narrators exercise of resistance against racism into the service of racism.
